The Bamileke Drum Table is a round coffee table hand-carved in solid mahogany, after the openwork tables of Cameroon’s western Grassfields.
In the Bamileke kingdoms, carved stools and tables were prestige objects, their openwork patterns associated with the spider, a figure of wisdom in Grassfields art. Designers have long used these tables as the one sculptural piece a room is built around.
The table is carved by artisan workshops to Reeva Sethi Home’s design, in solid mahogany finished to a deep, polished brown. The lattice is cut right through the drum, with a rounded knob at every crossing, so light passes between the openings.
At 39 inches across, it works as a coffee table in front of a sofa or a pair of chairs, or as a centre table in a library. It sits naturally among furniture collected over time, beside English mahogany, leather and plain linen.
