The Bombe Chest
Solid mahogany · Hand-painted chinoiserie · Antiqued brass hardware
The bombe chest is one of the few furniture forms that reads as both sculpture and storage. Its swelling, outward-curving silhouette became a defining form in eighteenth-century European cabinetmaking, giving the piece a sense of movement while maintaining visual balance. The result is a profile that feels carved rather than assembled.
This version is built in solid mahogany and finished by hand in a traditional chinoiserie motif of botanical florals and refined lattice borders. Antiqued brass hardware at the pulls and escutcheons introduces a quiet metallic contrast while allowing the painted surface to remain the visual focus.
The piece functions equally well as a decorative object and practical storage. In a foyer it anchors the entry with sculptural presence. In a bedroom it replaces a conventional dresser with something more distinctive. In a living room it introduces pattern and depth against otherwise restrained surroundings.
“Not every chest holds its shape for a century. The bombe form does, because it was designed to be looked at as much as it was designed to be used.”

Placement
This piece reads best where its silhouette can be clearly seen: an entry hall, the foot of a bed, or a living room alcove. The painted surface reflects light softly, so natural light or a directed lamp reveals its detail better than overhead lighting. Pair it with a mirror above in an entryway or a restrained painting in a more formal room. The antiqued brass hardware sits comfortably with both warm and cool metal palettes elsewhere in the interior.
