The Ryde Screen Panel

The Ryde Screen Panel is a three-panel mahogany folding screen drawn from the glazed cabinetry of Regency England. Folding screens came to European houses through the trade with China and Japan, and in English rooms they did practical work: keeping out draughts, screening a dressing area, dividing a room too large for one purpose. The Ryde sets clear glazing in astragal-style geometric mullions, the moulded glazing bars of Georgian and Regency bookcase doors, above raised lower panels.

Built in solid mahogany by artisan workshops to Reeva Sethi Home’s design, the screen is hand-rubbed and finished on both sides, so it can stand in the middle of a room with no back to hide. Three hinged sections open through 180°: set at an angle, the screen stands on its own, and folded, it stores flat against a wall.

At 84 inches high and 78 wide when open, the Ryde screens a dressing corner, the foot of a bed or a doorway, or separates a study from a living room. The glazing lets light through while still marking the division, so the room stays whole. It sits naturally among furniture collected over time, and is in stock at the Reeva Sethi Home showroom in Saratoga, California.
