The Ashdown Ladderback Dining Chair is a side chair in mahogany, with a three-slat ladder back and an upholstered seat.
The back rises on two posts topped with turned finials, which carry a round top rail finished with a ring at each end. Below it sit three slats, each cut in a shallow wave with a dip at the centre. The front legs and the stretcher between them are knuckle-turned, a run of tight rounded turnings that ends in small ball feet; the back legs stay square, and plain stretchers run along the sides. The outline follows seventeenth-century Welsh ladderbacks, which were usually rush-seated; here the seat is upholstered for longer sitting at the table. It comes in ivory as shown, or in any fabric or leather you choose. At 42″ high, the back sits above most dining-table aprons and reads well in a run of four or six.
