Furniture · Mahogany

The bergère appeared in France in the 1720s: a deep armchair with closed, upholstered sides and a loose seat cushion, made for comfort rather than ceremony. Under Louis XVI the curves straightened into squared backs, fluted legs that taper to the floor and a carved rosette at each corner of the seat rail. The Chiswick follows that later, neoclassical form, with a fine bead moulding running around the exposed mahogany frame and padded arm rests set on straight supports.

The back, sides and seat cushion are upholstered in ivory linen with a narrow self welt. Custom upholstery to order; the frame can also be painted antique white, as many French bergères were.
